Books We Like

A brief list (vampire books excluded) of books we are reading now!

The Story of Stuff

by Annie Leonard

Examines stuff: where it comes from, how we use it, and for how long we use it, then finally how we dispose of it; also available as 20 minute video.

- Beth

More Than Just Race: Being Black and Poor in the Inner City

by William Julius Wilson

I like it because the author is a sociologist and examines not only the cultural forces but also the structural forces behind the inequality.

 - Sarah

The Book:  On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are

by Allen Watts

In a very short book Watts explores some of life's hardest questions. The main influences on his philosophy are Hinduism, Chinese philosophy and modern science.

-Elizabeth

Stone Butch Blues

by Leslie Feinberg

An incredible novel about a person who was never enough woman or enough man.  Ridiculed throughout her childhood pre-Stonewall as a "he-she," a girl who looked like a boy, this story follows Jess's life through four decades as Jess discovers what is means to be outside of the binary.

Common Ground in a Liquid City: Essays in Defense of an Urban Future

Examines how we can most sustainably live in cities---an interesting take on economic development, common spaces, culture, etc.

-Colleen

The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East

by Sandy Tolan

An excellent introduction to the Palestine/Israel issue done in a novel format.

- Megan

No Impact Man  by Colin Beavan

Self-deprecating, funny and touching: A guilty liberal finally snaps, swears off plastic, goes organic, becomes a bicycle nut, turns off his power, and generally becomes a tree-hugging lunatic who tries to save the planet from environmental catastrophe while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-wearing, Four Seasons–loving wife along for the ride."

-Jenny

Between a Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama

by Tim Wise

Describes the manifestations of institutional racism within society, discusses the idea of a more subtle and complicated form of racism present in a post-Obama's victory.

- Megan

The Art of Racing in the Rain

by Garth Stein

This is a must read for any dog or animal lover.  It tells a story from a dog's perspective, a dog with a deep sense of compassion, justice, loyalty and a strong desire to be a human.

- Beth

Subversion of Politics: European Autonomous Social Movements And The Decolonization Of Everyday Life

by George Katsiaficas

Examines all sorts of collectives throughout Europe.

-Colleen

Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center

by bell hooks

This is my favorite book about challenging oppression, marginalization, and the binary.

-Katie

Grassroots at the Gateway: Class Politics and Black Freedom Struggle in St. Louis

by Clarence Lang

Engrossing study of the people and places in St. Louis that contributed to the struggle for equal rights, from pre-WW II into the Black Power movement of the mid 1970s.

-Jenny

Middlesex

by Jeffrey Eugenides

I like it because it is a fictional first person account of living transgendered, but I don't like the implications of genetics being the cause.

- Sarah
